They can grow up to two inches long and quickly increase in numbers. Sewer roaches will enter your home through your plumbing system and appear near drains and sinks as well as food and water.

Cockroaches are social insects; a large number of species are eithergregariousor inclined to aggregate, and a slightly smaller number exhibit parental care.[36]It used to be thought that cockroaches aggregated because they were reacting to environmental cues, but it is now believed thatpheromonesare involved in these behaviours. Some species secrete these in their feces with gut microbialsymbiontsbeing involved, while others use glands located on theirmandibles. Pheromones produced by thecuticlemay enable cockroaches to distinguish between different populations of cockroach by odor. The behaviours involved have been studied in only a few species, but German cockroaches leave fecal trails with an odor gradient.[36]Other cockroaches follow such trails to discover sources of food and water, and where other cockroaches are hiding. Thus, cockroaches haveemergent behaviour, in which group orswarm behaviouremerges from a simple set of individual interactions.
Theamerican cockroach(Periplaneta americana) is the largest species of common cockroach.Of all common cockroach species, the American cockroach has the largest body size; molts 6–14 times (mostly 13 times) before metamorphosis; and has the longest lifecycle, up to about 700 days.
It has an average length around 4cm (1.6in) and is about 7mm (0.28in) tall They are reddish brown and have a yellowish margin on the pronotum, the body region behind the head. Immature cockroaches resemble adults except they are wingless.
The American cockroach is commonly found outdoors in landscaped areas, sewers or storm drains and in low areas of a building where moisture levels are higher. Indoors, they are most commonly found in restaurants, grocery stores, and other places where food is prepared or stored. They are often found in damp sewers and basements, in heating ducts, and on the first floors of buildings.
American cockroaches are very mobile, travel quickly, and may dart out of sight into small cracks and crevices when humans enter a room. This roach is also an adequate flier. This roach is primarily an outdoor pest, feeding upon plant and decaying organic matter.
TheGerman cockroach(Blattella germanica), colloquially known as thecroton bug, is aspeciesof smallcockroach, typically about 1.1 to 1.6cm (0.43 to 0.63in)long. In color it varies from tan to almost black, and it has two dark, roughly parallel, streaks on thepronotumrunninganteroposteriorlyfrom behind the head to the base of the wings.
The German cockroach occurs widely in human buildings, but is particularly associated withrestaurants, food processingfacilities, hotels, and institutional establishments such asnursing homesandhospitals.
They have a high need for moisture and usually travel only 10 to 12 feet from their harborage for food and water (in kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, etc.), preferring darkness. They avoid lights and prefers to live near moisture sources and in humid areas given their general aversion to the cold and can proliferate quickly and usually nest around the kitchen and bathroom near food and moisture.
